Pavel Durov Brings Gram Back to TON

In Brief

  • • TON’s native currency will be renamed Gram.
  • • The blockchain itself will continue operating under the TON name.
  • • The change is expected to be completed within three weeks.

Pavel Durov has announced that TON’s native currency will be renamed Gram, which brings back the original name used in the project’s first whitepaper. The Telegram founder said the transition will take about three weeks and forms part of his broader “Make TON Great Again” initiative. Though the token is changing names, the blockchain itself will continue operating under the TON brand.

TON’s Native Currency Is Returning To Gram

As it happens, in a Telegram post published on June 1, Durov said Gram was the original name of TON’s currency before the project’s regulatory troubles forced major changes to its structure.

According to Durov, the goal of the rebrand is to reconnect the ecosystem with its roots as it prepares for future developments. He emphasized that TON will remain the name of the blockchain network, whereas Gram will become the name of the native currency that powers it.

The transition is expected to take approximately three weeks. Durov described the move as the fourth step in a seven-part roadmap designed to strengthen the TON ecosystem.

Importantly, the announcement doesn’t involve a fork or relaunch. Existing balances, staking positions, wallets, and network operations should remain unchanged throughout the process. For users, the update appears to be a branding change instead of a technical one.

Telegram Continues Expanding Its TON Ecosystem

The return of the Gram name revives a brand closely tied to Telegram’s original blockchain ambitions.

Telegram initially introduced Gram as part of its early blockchain project before regulatory challenges in the U.S. forced the company to abandon direct involvement. Community developers later continued building the network under the TON name, which eventually became both the blockchain’s identity and the token’s ticker.

Durov’s announcement separates those two brands once again. The blockchain will continue as TON, and the currency will operate under the Gram name in a structure that mirrors many other major blockchain ecosystems where the network and asset have distinct identities.

The rebrand also arrives as Telegram deepens its integration with TON-powered products and services. Over the past year, the messaging platform has increasingly embraced blockchain-based features, which has helped expose the ecosystem to its massive global user base.

At press time on June 2, TON was changing hands at the price of $2.03, up 5.7% in the last 24 hours, gaining 8% across the past seven days, and accumulating an increase of 51.8% over the month, according to the most recent chart information.

For now, Durov has framed the Gram revival as a return to the project’s original vision rather than the launch of a new cryptocurrency. The coming weeks will determine how quickly the ecosystem adopts the restored identity.
