Tether Adds 3.7 Tons of Gold-Backed Assets: Tokenization Enters a New Phase

Tether has expanded its gold-backed token supply in a major move. The company minted approximately 119,670 XAUT tokens worth nearly $497 million and directed them to its treasury.

The issuance represents roughly 3.7 metric tons of physical gold entering the onchain ecosystem.

A Substantial Addition to Tokenized Gold

On-chain records show the tokens moving from the null address into Tether’s treasury wallet.

The size of the issuance highlights the growing role of tokenized commodities. TechGaged recently reported that Tether Gold deposits in DeFi had surpassed $100 million, showing that XAUT is being used beyond simple exposure to gold.

At prices near $4,210 per XAUT, the mint represents one of the larger recent additions to the tokenized gold market.

Tether Gold is also trading higher, up about 1.2% on the day, as the underlying gold market remains strong.

Why the Move Matters

Tokenized gold connects a traditional safe-haven asset with blockchain-based settlement.

Each XAUT token is designed to represent ownership of physical gold held in reserve, giving holders a digital way to gain exposure to the commodity.

When a major issuer expands its supply by almost $500 million, it creates more room for investors to access gold through onchain markets.

The tokens can also potentially be used across trading and decentralized finance applications.

This development fits into a much larger shift toward bringing traditional assets onto public blockchains.

Tokenization Keeps Advancing

Gold is becoming one of the clearest examples of how real-world assets can move onto blockchain networks.

The broader RWA sector is also expanding across commodities, financial products and other traditional assets.

TechGaged has highlighted this wider transformation, noting that tokenization is moving beyond an experimental concept as more real-world assets find their way onto blockchain infrastructure.

Another recent TechGaged report showed Solana’s RWA ecosystem reaching more than $4.6 billion, providing another example of the growing scale of onchain assets.

A New Phase for Tokenized Gold

Tether’s latest mint adds roughly 3.7 tons of gold-backed assets to its treasury and reinforces the growing connection between physical commodities and blockchain infrastructure.

The key question now is how much of this expanding supply will translate into active trading, DeFi usage and broader onchain adoption.

If demand continues to grow, large issuances such as this could become an increasingly common part of the tokenization market.
