X is rolling out a new Cashtags feature that brings real-time stock and crypto data directly into posts. The update aims to keep traders inside the app by linking market sentiment, price data, and execution more closely than before. It also signals a broader push to turn X into a central hub for financial activity.

Cashtags connect chatter with live market data

Specifically, Cashtags function as clickable ticker tags with built-in intelligence. When users type a cashtag or contract address, X suggests matching stocks or crypto tokens so users can select the exact asset. Tapping a cashtag opens a view showing both the live price chart and posts mentioning that asset, all without leaving the app.

In a post on April 15, X head of product Nikita Bier said the feature builds on how markets already react to content on the platform. By aligning sentiment with pricing in one place, traders no longer need to switch between social feeds and charting tools. The result is a tighter loop between information and decision-making.

As it happens, Bier announced the launch of Cashtags back in February, when he suggested his company was preparing to fuse social media with live trading. At the time he said:

“I genuinely want crypto to proliferate on X, but applications that create incentives to spam, raid, and harass random users is not the way. It meaningfully degrades the experience for millions of people – only to enrich a few people. And yes, we are launching a number of features in a couple weeks, including Smart Cashtags that will enable you to trade stocks and crypto directly from timeline.”

Trading integration hints at bigger ambitions

X is also testing a trading flow through a pilot integration with Wealthsimple. Canadian users can tap a button within Cashtags and move directly toward placing trades via the brokerage platform.

For now, execution still happens off-platform, but the direction is clear. X is trying to smooth the path from discovery to action. Further rollout on additional platforms and regions is expected soon as the feature expands.
