Users fume as Meta announces end of Messenger support for desktop

Meta is set to shutdown stand-alone Messenger apps on desktop for both Windows and Mac computers from 15 December, leading to outrage by users.

The company in a note in its help center on 16 October said the apps are being deprecated and users will no longer be able to use them after the stated date.

Instead, users who attempt to do so will be redirected to Facebook.com to continue using the platform as usual.

What to do

If you are a desktop user of Messenger apps on Windows or Mac, note that the app will not work after the 15 of December.

But not to worry, because you’ll get an in-app notification when the wind up starts, but there are only 60 days left to use the app before it is finally shut down.

You can then delete the app and focus on just using the web version of the platform. Users who have secure storage turned on will have their chat history saved and will be available on the web as well.

If you have not turned on this function but would like to have your chat history saved, you can do so by clicking above your profile photo, selecting Privacy & safety, then clicking End-to-end encrypted chats.

Next, click Message Storage, and check if Secure Storage is turned on. If not, toggle the button to turn it on and your chat history will be saved automatically going forward.

It is noteworthy that if you only use Messenger without Facebook, you will be redirected to messenger.com to continue using it without having to open Facebook.

Users outraged

Facebook users have long complained about how compromised the platform has become over the years.

Many of them therefore only use Messenger on Mac and Windows for messaging only.

With the deprecation of the app on desktop, many of them are disappointed, alleging that Meta is only using the move to force users back on Facebook but they would rather stop using the app altogether.
