Instagram to lets users take control of their feed algorithm
Social media platforms are known to control the algorithm and feed users what they think they need, but not Instagram, at least not anymore.
The platform through its CEO announced on 29 October that the platform will soon give users the freedom to customize their feeds by changing their algorithm to suit their interests.
Though Instagram is the first to start, it appears Meta has plans to expand the arrangement to its other social platforms.
Social media freedom
When using social media, it is likely that you come across some kind of content you would not like on your feed or timeline, and Instagram users have been complaining against such content for a while now.
Users have severally complained about seeing unpleasant materials such as adult content on their feed, which have nothing to do with their account description.
To ensure that such occurrences are reduced to a minimum, Instagram is bringing this update which allows users to add and remove topics they can see content about.
The feature will first start with Reels but will expand to Explore soon, the announcement says. There are also plans to extend the flexibility to Threads and probably more Meta platforms.
Instagram CEO Mosseri wrote on Threads:
“We want people to have more control over their Instagram experience, and hope this will be a meaningful new way to shape what you see. Test it out and let me know what you think.”
Enhancing user experience
Instagram, like other social media platforms, has been working on improvements to better their user experience.
Several of such improvements came on board this year, one of which is the DM feature which allows users to send direct private messages to other users.
Although this has been abused, it was intended to enhance communication and connection between Instagram users, and being able to modify the algorithm is a big icing on the cake.
