San Franciscans react as city shuts down app that helps drivers avoid tickets

An app that enables San Francisco residents to avoid parking tickets was shut down by the authorities, sparking reactions online.

The creator of the app, known as Riley Walz on X announced the launch of the viral app on 23 September, roughly four hours after which the city shut down the app by making the relevant data unavailable.

Residents have reacted to the news, airing their annoyance and criticising the government for taking such a step when more pressing issues are left unattended.

Hiding data

The app named “Find My Parking Cops,” was designed to collate data from the San Francisco parking ticket system, allowing users to see tickets seconds after they are written.

However within hours, the city authorities changed the system settings so that the information was no longer accessible to the app.

Responding, Walz’s followers who seemed to be residents of the city praised him for the app while others asked him to create one for other cities.

Other respondents questioned the legality of the app, and asked if it is ok to avoid parking tickets rather than parking correctly and not breaking the law.

Others have also questioned the legality of the police making such information private rather than public.

Though the app creator later found a way around the blockade and got the app running again, the app was reportedly running intermittently on Wednesday.

Incidentally, San Francisco has gone after such gestures in the past. San Francisco’s 311 service threatened to shut down an API needed for the AI-enabled Solve SF 311 reporting app to work, until there was a workaround just like Walz’s case.

He is reportedly taking the app further to make the data downloadable so that any resident can know and avoid where they are most likely to get a parking ticket.
