Thinking of sending crypto? Don’t, until you read this

If you’re thinking of making a crypto transaction right now, you need to slow down as there is an ongoing attack affecting on-chain transactions.

Ledger CTO in a tweet on 8 September warned of this ‘large-scale’ attack that is caused by the account of a reputable developer being compromised to spread risky packages.

How the attack works

The attackers have taken over the account of a well known and respected developer to promote compromised packages, the tweet says.

So far, the affected packages, which can easily swap crypto addresses to steal funds.

have already been downloaded over 1 billion times, meaning the entire JavaScript ecosystem may be at risk.

Crypto users who don’t use hardware wallets are particularly at risk of being affected by this operation, and are advised to refrain from carrying out transactions on any chain until further notice.

Those using hardware wallets are also cautioned to be careful and confirm every detail before authorising transactions to be safe.

While it is not clear if the attacker is also stealing recovery seed phrases at the moment, it is safer to assume they are to be on the safe side.

Boom of crypto-related attacks

There is a sudden increase in the rate of attacks on crypto users lately. This is a usual pattern, especially in bull markets such as the one we are in currently.

Earlier today, reports emerged about bad actors exploiting Apple the calendar app to push spams that lure users into losing their crypto assets.

By promising them crypto giveaways, urgent investment opportunities etc in their appointments, they are tricked into giving away information such as private keys and personal data.

Extra caution must be exercised, especially by new comers to the industry to ensure safety as more of these scams are likely to surface until the end of the bull market.
