Musk Teases Wild Plan: Earth Sucks? Build ‘Moon Base Alpha’

In Brief

  • • Musk outlined SpaceX’s plan to begin human expansion beyond Earth with a permanent Moon base.
  • • He said improved rocket reliability will enable practical off-world settlement.
  • • The Moon base is framed as the first step toward a self-sustaining city on Mars.

Elon Musk has once again shared his vision for humanity’s off-world future, stating that SpaceX is preparing to “expand the map” of human civilization, starting with a permanent ‘Moon Base Alpha’ and ultimately a self-sustaining city on Mars.

As it happens, Musk outlined SpaceX’s long-term ambitions to establish a permanent base on the Moon, a project he informally calls ‘Moon Base Alpha,’ as he said during an episode of ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ shared by cryptocurrency entrepreneur and one of X’s most influential users, Mario Nawfal, on November 13.

In the interview, he laid out a conceptual framework for how SpaceX views the progression of space expansion, describing space as a series of “concentric shells” surrounding the Earth. In his view, humanity’s next step is to begin occupying those outer layers, starting with the Moon and eventually Mars.

“You can think of space as being concentric shells of the surface of the Earth. (…) Imagine if there were just a few thousand airstreams on Earth. What are the odds that they’d hit each other?”

The analogy reflects SpaceX’s continued push toward reusable, high-frequency launch capabilities. Musk believes that once rocket reliability approaches that of commercial aviation, entirely new use-cases, including off-world settlement, become feasible.

Moon Base as the First Step

Indeed, Musk described a future in which the Moon hosts a permanent science outpost, not unlike a scaled-up version of Antarctica’s research stations. This ‘Moon Base Alpha’ would serve as a proving ground for autonomous construction, in-situ resource utilization, and long-duration life support systems.

These are all technologies crucial for future missions deeper into the solar system. As Musk puts it, “Imagine if we had a Moon Base Alpha, where there’s a permanent science base on the Moon.”

Mars Still the Endgame

While the Moon sits at the front of this roadmap, Musk reiterated that the ultimate goal remains the creation of a self-sustaining city on Mars, capable of surviving without constant resupply from Earth. As he said:

“So the goal of SpaceX is to get rocket technology to a point where we can extend life beyond Earth, and establish a self-sustaining city on Mars.”

This aligns with previous statements from Musk and SpaceX leadership, who view Mars colonization as a critical safeguard for humanity’s long-term survival.

With Starship test flights accelerating and NASA’s Artemis program preparing for crewed lunar missions, Musk’s ‘Moon Base Alpha’ may be more than rhetoric, but the next step in SpaceX’s rapidly expanding frontier.
