Hackers hijack Valve’s official Dota 2 YouTube to promote crypto scam

Crypto scammers are on rampage, hacking websites and social media accounts to promote their fake coins. This time, they have taken over the official YouTube account of a popular video game to push a fresh crypto scam.

According to a tweet on October 15, the hackers hijacked the official Valve Dota 2 YouTube channel to promote a meme coin it claims to be the company’s official launch.

Scams on the increase

Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena video game produced by Valve, an American video game company.

Over the years, Dota 2 has grown to become a popular game with millions of players worldwide, and has nearly 1.3 million YouTube followers.

It is such channels with large followings that scammers target in an attempt to push their scams, especially in bull markets such as the current one.

This is a time when expectations are high and retailers with little to no experience are looking to scoop some quick profits, making them likely to fall for such scams.

As of the time of writing this report, the Dot 2 and Valve social media accounts haven’t confirmed or denied the hack.

An attack on gaming channels

The hack of Dot 2 isn’t isolated but appears to be a part of a large-scale attack on gaming YouTube channels.

The X user who shared the information said even though the channel is officially managed by Valve, the company may have given the keys to ESL (Electronic Sports League) to manage the account at some point, which may have given the hackers access.

ESL’s official YouTube channel was also hacked less than 24 hours ago, around the same time that Dot 2 was hacked.

Another gaming company Blast was hacked around the same time to promote a similar memecoin scam.
