A hacker in the dark
Hackers have taken over the official X account of the president of Paraguay to promote Bitcoin, an official announcement says.

According to a press release by the president’s office on 9 June, the account showed irregular activities that suggest it was compromised.
Promoting Bitcoin
The account was hacked by people who wanted to promote Bitcoin. Although the original message has been deleted, screenshots reveal that the hackers announced Bitcoin as an official legal tender in the South American country.
It also invited investors to send Bitcoin to a certain Bitcoin address as investment, which is likely their personal wallet address.
Shortly after the account was compromised, the government released the official statement saying that the president’s account has been compromised and urged citizens to disregard any messages coming from it.

The statement also added that the situation is under control as the government was already working with X to rectify the issue.
“We inform that the official account of the President of the Republic on the social network X has presented irregular activity that suggests possible unauthorized access. The team of CERTPY is already working together with the platform X to clarify the situation.”
It isn’t known if any of his over 400,000 followers fell for the scam by sending Bitcoin to the address provided.
Public figures as hack targets
Public figures have been the targets for hacks recently, especially for crypto scammers looking to lure unsuspecting followers of such figures into sending them Bitcoin.
Earlier this year, a similar incident affected the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, where hackers also used his official X account to promote a fake official Saudi Arabia memecoin.
This is a common occurrence at times when there’s high expectations concerning the future of cryptocurrencies. It calls for precautionary measures to prevent hackers from accessing such accounts.
