Tesla Users Report “Schizophrenic” Braking – Musk Says Fix Coming
In Brief
- • Tesla’s FSD v14 improves performance but still hesitates and stutters at intersections.
- • Elon Musk says a deeper fix is coming in FSD v14.2, expected in about a month.
- • Tesla reiterates its strict safety-first approach as it refines the system.
Tesla’s Full Self-Driving v14 rollout has delivered major improvements over v13, but one frustrating issue has persisted across versions: Stuttering and hesitancy at intersections. However, Elon Musk has hinted that the next major update may solve the problem.
As it happens, since the rollout of Tesla’s FSD v14, users have widely praised its improvements, except for one recurring complaint: the car stutters and hesitates at intersections, inching forward, braking, and second-guessing itself before proceeding.
Threaded reports surfaced again this week, prompting Tesla CEO Elon Musk to directly confirm that Tesla aims to fully resolve the issue in FSD v14.2. While incremental updates have reduced the severity for many drivers, Tesla has acknowledged the need for a deeper architectural fix.
Complaints of Tesla FSD’s “Schizophrenic” Intersection Behavior
Specifically, Musk was commenting on the reports by two users, Jacob Hilton, who described the 14.1.4 version as “kind of schizophrenic for me – sudden braking, etc.” and wondering if anyone else has experienced it, and Aric Line responding that it hasn’t happened frequently, but was “quite jarring” when it has.
Additionally, Line highlighted his belief that Musk has “acknowledged this and points to resolution in 14.2,” to which Musk replied with a simple “Yes.”
However, users will still need patience, as v14.2 is estimated to be at least a month away, with current hardware-dependent releases cycling through internal testing. Still, Musk’s confirmation signals that Tesla is treating the issue with priority, and v14.2 could become the update that converts FSD v14 from strong to truly polished.
Meanwhile, Tesla Senior Vice President for Automotive Tom Zhu pointed to Musk’s “prime directive” for the FSD autopilot system, in which it must avoid a crash no matter how bizarre and outlandish the situation, even if it means a UFO landing right in front of the car, emphasizing Tesla’s uncompromising approach to safety.
