Samsung to start producing industry’s first 24Gb GDDR7 DRAM next year
Samsung Electronics has developed the advanced memory technology industry’s first 24-gigabit (Gb) GDDR71 DRAM.
The technology giant announced on 17 October that Validation for the 24Gb GDDR7 in next-generation AI computing systems will begin this year, but plans for commercialization are expected early next year.
Building on 16Gb GDDR7
Samsung is mostly known for producing smartphones, but the company has also positioned itself as the world leader in advanced memory technology. The 24-gigabit (Gb) GDDR7 DRAM is a step higher from the 16Gb GDDR7 that was released last year.
According to Samsung, the 24Gb GDDR7 can be used in various fields that require high-performance memory solutions, such as data centers and AI workstations. YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics said:
“After developing the industry’s first 16Gb GDDR7 last year, Samsung has reinforced its technological leadership in the graphics DRAM market with this latest achievement. We will continue to lead the graphics DRAM market by bringing next-generation products that align with the growing needs of the AI market.” The 24Gb GDDR7 utilizes 5th-generation 10-nanometer (nm)-class DRAM, which enables cell density to increase by 50% while maintaining the same package size as the predecessor.
Samsung has also employed three-level Pulse-Amplitude Modulation (PAM3) signaling to achieve a 25% improvement over the previous version, helping it to achieve the industry-leading speed for graphics DRAM of 40 gigabits-per-second (Gbps).
Venturing into AI
Launching the 24Gb GDDR7 DRAM for AI computing is a major step in Samsung’s venture into AI. This is expected since top tech giants are all expanding their scopes into the AI space.
Despite widespread skepticism against AI technology, it has become more obvious that many businesses are tending towards it and the trend isn’t slowing down any time soon, hence the need to catch up.
