OpenAI rolls out full-fledged web browser to take on Google
AI chatbots have been competing with Google and other web browsers, but it seems the competition just got tougher.
OpenAI just announced today 21 October the release of ChatGPT Atlas, a full-fledged web browser powered primarily by ChatGPT.
The browser is said to get smarter with use, especially as it draws from chats and other details from ChatGPT to complete tasks for users seamlessly.
The web war
Before the advent of AI, web browsers were in charge and fully in control of the web, but that has changed quickly.
Chatbots such as ChatGPT, Grok, and DeepSeek easily took over as users say they prefer to use them for information search on the web.
This has led to web pages suffering from a lack of traffic as chatbots crawl the information and present them as summary without sending readers to the web pages.
Just recently, Wikipedia released a statement saying it has seen a decline in human traffic since chatbots hijack their readers.
The browser also works with what is called agent mode, giving users a unique experience based on their browsing context.
Browsing memory and history is also optional, so that ChatGPT Atlas doesn’t store any browsing history unless the user wants it to.
To use it, the user needs to sign into ChatGPT and import their bookmarks, saved passwords, and browsing history from their current browser.
OpenAI is making the browser available worldwide on MacOS to Free, Plus, Pro, and Go users.
It is also available in beta for Business, and can be enabled for Enterprise and Edu users while rollout for Windows, iOS, and Android is coming soon.
AI winning?
AI has taken over almost every sector of human endeavor, including web browsing.
This is likely to worsen the situation of online publishers who already complain of the technology making them bankrupt.
As it is, AI seems to be winning the war, but online publishers will likely fight back eventually, as browsers like Atlas will completely change web browsing if allowed to.
