New study exposes widespread use of AI by top American newspapers

The use of AI has increased greatly for most people and for work in almost every sector, but you probably didn’t know that top newspapers use it too, because they don’t disclose it.

According to a study published on 21 October, there is a widespread use of AI by top American newspapers for writing news and other forms of content.

While the use is more prevalent among lesser known newspapers, top ones are not left out and public figures also rely on it for 100% of their content.

A staggering discovery

Using a state-of-the-art AI detector known as Pangram, the researchers discovered that roughly 9% of newly-published articles are either partially or fully AI-generated.

They also analyzed 45,000 opinion pieces from top news outlets like Washington Post, New York Times, and Wall Street Journal and found that they are 6.4 times more likely to contain AI-generated content than news articles.

Content about weather and technology were more likely to be written using AI, and several AI-flagged op-eds were also found to be authored by prominent public figures.

What is more concerning is that not many of the newspapers declare their use of AI for content, with only five out of 100 articles having the disclosure of AI use.

“Overall, our audit highlights the immediate need for greater transparency and updated editorial standards regarding the use of AI in journalism to maintain public trust.”

The AI epidemic

The use of AI, especially among prominent public figures has been a concern recently, as these important personalities use it not just for opinion pieces but also to write their speeches.

Several British members of parliament were recently found to be using AI to write their speeches as revealed by the monotonous tone of many speeches on the floor.

What makes it worse is the impression that they wrote the speeches themselves, which is one thing this study seeks to correct.
