Musk Predicts Robots Will Replace All Work by This Year

Musk Predicts The Year Robots Will Replace Our Jobs

In Brief

  • • Musk predicts AI and robots will make work optional by around 2045.
  • • He says future jobs will resemble hobbies as automation handles most labor.
  • • Rapid progress in humanoid robots like Optimus underpins his post-labor outlook.

Elon Musk believes the world is heading toward a radical shift and a future where artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics become so capable, so widespread, and so economically powerful that traditional work disappears as a necessity.

In a new conversation on entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath’s podcast streamed on November 30, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said that within twenty years, and possibly much sooner, machines will take over nearly every essential form of labor, leaving humans to work only if they truly want to in the year 2045.

“It’s going to be maybe a matter of personal choice. (…) My prediction is, in the future, working will be optional.”

Musk didn’t present the vision as dystopian or bleak. Instead, he framed it as the result of extraordinary gains in productivity, driven by general-purpose robots and next-generation AI systems that can perform everything from manufacturing and logistics to knowledge-based tasks.

“I think it’ll actually be that people don’t have to work at all. It may not be that far in the future. Maybe only, I don’t know, ten, I’d say less than 20 years. My prediction is, in less than 20 years, working will be optional. Working at all will be optional. Like a hobby, pretty much.”

In Musk’s view, this wave of automation doesn’t eliminate meaning but simply removes economic pressure. Humans could still work, but the activity would resemble a hobby or personal pursuit rather than a financial necessity.

He compared the idea to gardening, where people grow tomatoes at home not because it’s cheaper or more efficient than buying them at a store, but because the process brings joy, satisfaction, or peace of mind. Musk believes future employment may feel the same way.

“[It’s] in the same way that, like say, you can grow your own vegetables in your garden or you could go to the store and buy vegetables. It’s much harder to grow your own vegetables. But some people like to grow their vegetables, which is fine. But it’ll be optional in that way.”

Those who enjoy the routine or identity of a job can keep doing it, while others will shift toward creative, social, or exploratory pursuits without worrying about survival.

A Post-Labor Economy and Musk’s Optimus Vision

Musk acknowledged the boldness of the claim and noted that critics may revisit the prediction two decades from now and decide he was wrong. But he also hinted the timeline could contract even further, potentially to just ten or fifteen years, given the velocity of AI and robotics development.

“Obviously, people can play this back in 20 years, and say, ‘Look, Elon made this ridiculous prediction and it’s not true.’ But I think it will turn out to be true that, in less than 20 years, but maybe even as little as, I don’t know, ten or 15 years, the advancements in AI and robotics will bring us to the point where working is optional.”

The arrival of humanoid robots like Tesla’s Optimus, which Musk has repeatedly described as the most important product the company is building, reinforces his belief that society is moving toward a post-labor era faster than most people expect.

His comments echo statements from the 2025 Tesla Annual Shareholder Meeting, where he argued that Optimus could eliminate global poverty by providing abundant labor and dramatically reducing the cost of essential goods and services.

If robots can manufacture, deliver, care, repair, and perform medical tasks at scale, he said, they could create a baseline standard of living far higher than anything achievable today.

Whether Musk’s prediction becomes reality or remains a provocative thought experiment, the underlying message is clear: the economic foundations of the modern world may be far more fragile and far more transformable than anything people have prepared for.
