Lawsuit says Roblox became ‘a school shooter’s playground’ under a16z

A new lawsuit filed in Kentucky accuses Roblox and its top investors, Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and Kleiner Perkins, of enabling an online environment that fueled a teen’s suicide and turned the gaming platform into what the complaint calls “a school shooter’s playground.”

Specifically, the 89-page complaint filed by attorneys for Jaimee Seitz, the mother of 13-year-old Audree Heine, alleges that Roblox and its backers knowingly prioritized growth and monetization over child safety, letting communities that glorify mass violence thrive unchecked.

Prioritizing profit over safety?

Heine, who died by suicide in 2024, was reportedly active in Discord and Roblox groups that idolized school shooters like Dylan Klebold. Her family says she would still be alive if Roblox had properly moderated its platform. As the suit reads:

“Audree was pushed to suicide by an online community dedicated to glorifying violence and emulating notorious mass shooters, a community that can thrive and prey upon young children like Audree only because of Defendants’ egregiously tortious conduct.”

Furthermore, the filing blames the platform’s rapid growth, boosted by venture capital from a16z and Kleiner Perkins, for creating financial pressure that led to a culture of neglect around safety.

According to the lawsuit, Roblox executives rejected employee proposals for parental approval systems that could have shielded children from predators, and delayed basic protections like age verification and restricted chat in order to keep engagement metrics high for Wall Street.

a16z’s other controversial investments come under fire

At the same time, the complaint targets Andreessen Horowitz, citing its funding of companies accused of profiting from non-consensual AI porn, suicide-related content, and synthetic influencer manipulation. In 2020, a16z led a $150 million funding round for Roblox, praising its “high-growth business model.”

Moreover, the lawsuit argues that the same model monetizes children at the cost of their safety, turning vulnerable users into easy revenue sources due to them having “more free time, underdeveloped cognitive functioning, and diminished impulse control.”

The complaint seeks punitive damages and structural reforms to the platform’s moderation policies, asserting that Roblox and its investors put profits and investors ahead of protecting children from psychological and emotional harm.
