Google Chrome Gets More Creepy with Latest Autofill Update

In Brief

  • • Google’s latest Chrome update expands autofill to draw more personal data from users.
  • • The changes aim to streamline tasks such as holiday shopping, but they raise privacy concerns.
  • • Chrome recently received other updates like security fixes and a new text-to-speech feature.

In a bid to make Chrome autofill more convenient for users, Google has announced new updates to the feature. However, a close look at the new update shows that it is a bit too intrusive and some users may not like it.

Google announced on 5 December that the new upgrade is to make holiday shopping easier by eliminating the need to fill endless forms on different websites with different details that are hard to remember. The company is rolling out four updates to achieve this, but two are of more concern.

Google Brings New Chrome Autofill Access

Autofill is a feature of chrome browser that lets users automatically fill out information such as passwords, usernames, and others. However, the information it can autofill has been restricted until now. With the new update, Chrome autofill can now access users’ saved Home and Work addresses that are shared securely from your Google Account.

Users no longer need to fill in their information when they visit a brand new website. The new update also enables Chrome integration of Google Wallet so that users don’t need to remember details like loyalty card numbers, travel details, and vehicle information. Such information is now automatically accessed without having to pull out cards.

While these capabilities sound great and make life easier, some users may find them too intrusive as they are able to fetch personal information automatically. Even prior to this latest update that gives the feature more access to user data, some Chrome users have complained about the browser seeking to autofill information.

With the more intrusive update, more users may be complaining about their information getting shared without their consent in the future. The Webdevs subreddit recommended the use of other browsers to bypass the autofill feature.

Google Releases Multiple Chrome Updates

Apart from the Chrome autofill update, Google recently rolled out a few other updates as well. It has taken care of a number of vulnerabilities, as well as introduced the ability for the browser to read text directly from websites in a text-to-speech fashion, in addition to more AI features that make it more easily usable.

While the AI features and text-to-speech are ok, the autofill update may be a major concern for some users who are more careful about sharing their data online. However, Google may not listen to users as it has done in the past.
