Google Trials New AI Mode as User Criticism Persists

In Brief

  • • Key Takeaways:

Google appears to be testing a new version of AI mode for search results. A Chrome user shared the result of a search that showed two options from Google. The test is possibly in response to the many criticisms from users concerning the old version.

  • Google is testing a new version of its AI search mode as revealed by a user.
  • The test is probably a way to improve search outcomes as users have criticized the old version vehemently.
  • It appears the test is only available for a select number of users, not all Google users.

A Chrome user shared a screenshot of the AI mode test in an X post in response to his search query about community scholarships.

The tests may be a step towards improving the responses from Google’s AI mode since the old version as well as AI Overview have been widely criticized by users.

A Difficult Choice to Make

Google’s AI mode provided two separate responses to the user’s query, and clearly indicated that their feedback was being sought concerning the better version.

The responses were basically the same, just different versions with slightly different structures. Option A has the same information in the first paragraph as option B, but B has some important texts highlighted in bold.

Option B also has a more direct approach to providing the required information than A, but both versions provide links to other sources as well for further reading.

The information is the same overall in both versions, making it a hard choice to pick between the two.

Google’s Test Restricted to Some Users?

Apparently, the test is not available to all Google users. A search in Chrome for some users will show only one version with no option to vote for a particular response.

It is not clear what criteria they are using to decide who participates in the test, but an improvement in the search results will make a big difference for all users.
