Google Rolls Out Live Videos on 911 Calls for Android
In Brief
- • Google has introduced live video sharing for 911 calls on Android, allowing sharing of visual information.
- • The feature allows responders to request and view secure real-time video to better assess situations.
- • This update builds on Google’s expanding suite of Android safety tools like Car Crash and Fall Detection.
Emergency 911 calls have received a major boost from Google, making it more engaging and detailed. The company has enabled video calls for this important group of calls, giving users better security and convenience in emergencies.
Google announced on 10 December that the feature now available to Android users allows them to share critical visual information with relevant authorities in an emergency situation with just a tap. This will make it easier for responders to quickly assess the situation and provide tailored help without physical visit.
Google Live Emergency Calls to Save Lives
Before now, 911 calls were restricted to voice calls, which had several limitations — the victim may be too weak to speak or unable to, due to their mouths being covered etc. to address this, Google introduced the video feature which allows authorities to have a clearer picture of the situation even without the caller saying a word.
By allowing responders to see what is going on for themselves, they can prepare adequately to offer the right kind of help the situation needs. A dispatcher can request for the caller or texter to share a live video of the situation and a secure live streaming video can begin immediately.
That way, they can offer the tailored help required or guide the caller through the process to salvage the situation with strategies such as CPR before professional help arrives. This also saves the authorities from prank callers who claim emergency situations that don’t exist just to spite responders. With a video call, responders can confirm a real situation before acting.
When a responder sends a request for a video call, the victim will receive a prompt on their phone screen and start to securely share their camera’s live video with one tap if they choose to.
Google Builds on Security Features
The live video feature for Android phones is the latest in a series of safety features that Google has rolled out for Android users. Other features like Emergency Location Service, Car Crash and Fall Detection, and Satellite SOS already exist to make it easier to get help and provide users peace of mind.
The company is also making much progress in artificial intelligence. It recently added Gemini to Android Auto, allowing drivers to communicate verbally with their cars on trips and also seamlessly coordinate their journeys with stops, schedules, etc.
