Gemini is coming to (even) older Wear OS watches – Is yours eligible?
As Google intends to fully replace its Google Assistant with Gemini this year, it will not happen only on Android phones and tablets – but also on other devices too, including the Nest smart speakers, in-car Android Auto-based entertainment systems, and smartwatches running Google’s Wear OS – even older ones.
Indeed, back in May, Google first announced Gemini for Wear OS at the Google I/O 2025 developers’ event, and last week, it debuted it with the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 series, following up with an announcement it would roll out to other Wear OS smartwatches from other brands, per a report by Android Authority on July 16.
Which older Wear OS watches will support Gemini?
Specifically, the planned lineup includes brands other than the Galaxy Watch or Pixel Watch models, like OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi, and Google will be rolling out its artificial intelligence (AI) on their smartwatches over the coming weeks, making it accessible to more smartwatch owners.
Meanwhile, the only condition is that the devices are running Wear OS 4 or newer, and checking whether Gemini is available for your Wear OS watch is rather simple and straightforward. Just open the Play Store on your smartwatch, scroll down to ‘Manage apps,’ and check for a new ‘Google Gemini on Watch’ update alert.
If it’s there, go ahead and install it, and it will create a new Gemini app in the app drawer on your device, whereas you’ll notice that the Google Assistant app is now nowhere to be seen. Running it is easy, as well. Like with its predecessor, you can assign a button to launch it or say the usual ‘OK Google’ or ‘Hey Google.’
Once you make the transition, you’ll be able to use Gemini on your watch to set times, alarms, and interact with other supported apps, like Google Messages or Calendar, with other features, like a summary of notifications or access to third-party apps like WhatsApp, still on hold.
Meanwhile, a new Gemini app redesign has leaked earlier this month ahead of the official rollout, revealing that Gemini’s new avatar will likely feature the familiar Google colors – red, blue, green, and yellow – as well as the reshaped overlay and suggestion chips.
