Elon Musk Stuns Fans: Optimus’ Viral Hand Wasn’t New Version

Just when Tesla fans thought they had finally seen a preview of Optimus V3’s capabilities, Elon Musk dropped a surprise revelation: the incredibly dexterous robotic hand demonstrated at the 2025 Annual Shareholder Meeting wasn’t from V3 at all. In fact, it wasn’t even new.

As it happens, Tesla’s humanoid robot has impressed audiences with its improving mobility, coordination, and object-handling ability, but according to Musk, the public has still not seen the real thing, and this admission hints at a much more advanced robotic design coming soon.

Indeed, at the 2025 shareholder meeting, Tesla displayed a robotic hand capable of complex finger articulation and delicate grasping, and many assumed this was a teaser for the Optimus V3 hardware. Musk corrected that assumption directly on X, replying to a post from his mother, Maye Musk:

This revelation means that Tesla is actively holding back the next-generation design, suggesting significant improvements in dexterity, mechanics, and miniaturized actuation.

Why the Hand Matters Most

Notably, Musk has consistently described the hand as the single hardest part of humanoid robotics. During the shareholder meeting, he explained that this is because the human hand is extraordinarily dexterous, and replicating fine motor control is extremely difficult.

Furthermore, real-world artificial intelligence (AI) must coordinate with precise, fast mechanical actuation, with high-volume manufacturing adding another layer of complexity. As he said at the time:

“Engineering the hand really well, the real-world AI, and then volume manufacturing. Those are generally the things that are missing. One or more of those things are missing from other companies. So Tesla is the only one that has all three of those.”

Not Tesla’s Style: Keeping V3 Hidden

Interestingly, Tesla typically showcases cutting-edge prototypes early, even in rough form. But in this case, Optimus V3 remains unseen, raising speculation that the company wants to launch the next Optimus iteration with a significant, polished leap in capabilities.

If V2 already impressed shareholders, the next reveal could demonstrate advances like human-level finger precision, improved grip strength and adaptability, faster response times, better sensor integration, as well as smoother, more natural movement.
