Elon Musk lays out timeline for Tesla’s unprecedented self-driving jump

Amid his company’s unstoppable growth into various industry branches, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed a potential timeline for an unprecedented self-driving feature – the ability for drivers to play video games while behind the wheel.

As it happens, there are already a few videos on the internet of drivers performing this action exactly, which is something not yet possible for anyone using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) suite, as the system is not yet fully autonomous.

When playing video games while driving?

Indeed, a video of someone playing Grand Theft Auto while sitting behind the wheel of their Cybertruck has appeared on X, and Musk commented that this capability would become available in “probably 3 to 6 months, depending on regulatory approval in your city and state.”

For the time being, drivers have to remain aware and responsible for the vehicle and be ready to take over when needed. However, Tesla has made major strides over the past years in refining the capabilities and accuracy of FSD through methods like data collection and hardware improvements.

In fact, FSD has advanced so far that Tesla launched its Robotaxi platform in Austin, Texas, in June this year, allowing passengers to hail a ride in a Model Y and ride around the city in a geofence about 90 square miles in size, with no one in the driver’s seat but featuring a Safety Monitor in the passenger’s seat.

Meanwhile, Tesla Robotaxi defeated its biggest competitor, Waymo, in an important performance metric – the size of the service area – in a matter of days after first hitting the streets in Austin, all the while appearing to make a joke about it with the peculiar shape on the map.

Elsewhere, Tesla Robotaxi has made some updates to its service to make it better and more convenient for customers, stopping in the exact location of the user’s phone instead of navigating strictly to the pickup point listed in the app, which CEO Elon Musk confirmed himself.
