Driverless drama: Police pull over Waymo car for illegal turn and this happens
The police in San Bruno California have pulled over a Waymo car for taking an illegal U-turn, reports say on Tuesday.
According to a video shared on 29 September, the police pulled over the driverless car after breaking traffic rules while carrying a passenger.
No ticket
The police pulled over the vehicle during a routine patrol when they noticed it made a wrong U-turn. They were more concerned after noticing that the car had a passenger in it but no driver.
Although the car broke a traffic rule, the cops could not issue a citation because there was no driver in it.
Waymo cars are autonomous, that is they don’t need a human being to drive them around as they are programmed to drive on their own, with the ability to spot and avoid obstacles in their path as well as comply with traffic rules.
Obviously Waymo designers did not anticipate a situation in which the cars will break traffic rules, hence there is no provision for the police to issue a citation in case of a breach.
Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time an autonomous vehicle has broken traffic rules. There have been several cases of such vehicles being stopped on routine traffic patrols for breaking different rules.
There are also situations where the cars have malfunctioned in traffic, creating scenes by honking unnecessarily or in other ways.
To address those concerns, reports say that there are state laws that will take effect next July, enabling the police to issue citations to driverless vehicles.
Should we be concerned
The answer to this question is both yes and no. No because the driverless technology is still evolving and improving, and yes because the technology is not absolutely safe for now.
Scientists recently tested an autonomous vehicle using mirrors and found that the LIDAR technology such vehicles use to detect and avoid objects in their path can be tricked and made to mislead the car into making wrong moves.
