Bots named ‘Elon Musk’ invade TikTok. What’s happening?
Bots named “Elon Musk” have surfaced on TikTok, with several users of the platform complaining about the bots contacting them.
One of the affected users on 17 March said they had seen several bots on TikTok named after the billionaire businessman who is also the owner of X, and was wondering if they were the only ones seeing the bots.
Other users confirm
Several other TikTok users have confirmed receiving requests from bots reaching out to them in the name of Elon Musk.
The bots reach out in a polite way, telling the targeted user that they are getting a message from the billionaire, hoping that they will respond.
According to the users, more of the bots keep coming up after blocking them, and TikTok doesn’t take them seriously when they report the incidents.
One even expressed shock that the platform was unable to tell that a bot was reaching out to them in the name of the world’s richest man.
“TikTok’s reporting system is sooo bad and it really ticks me off. There have been so many times when I’m trying to report a fraud/scam account that is obviously impersonating a verified TikTok acc and I get the “no violation found”. Cherry on top is that snide message at the end, something like “we understand you may not want to see this type of content” …as I’m just a hater for reporting an obvious fraud.
Recurring reports
TikTok users have expressed much concern recently, not just about bots but about the platform’s moderation and policies which appear to favor bad actors.
Earlier this month, one user complained of being ignored when they reported an account that was obviously promoting racism, to which TikTok said there was no violation.
However, the platform has been suspending users for talking about candy and other harmless subjects. Could TikTok be broken or something else is going on?
