Apple billboard sparks controversy with phallic design

With the increasingly competitive technology market, companies are trying to outdo each other with attention-grabbing billboards, but it seems that Apple might’ve gone too far with its recent billboard that features (intentionally or not) a phallic design.

Indeed, a user on the r/Miami subreddit has recently observed (and shared photographic evidence of) a new Apple billboard showing an image featuring a shark along with a cartoon scuba diver that has an oversized finger resembling a phallic design, per a Miami New Times report on July 30.

Where can we see Apple’s phallic design ad?

As it happens, the user u/TommyGunMassacre spotted the billboard above Miami’s I-95 freeway, around 15 feet (4.5 meters) in length. It is part of Apple’s Shot on iPhone, Drawn on iPad cartoon series that features creations from eight artists, and shows a real-life shark and a drawn scuba diver with an octopus on their finger.

Whether this was an intentional ploy by Apple to use our rich imagination to get the word out or not, it’s certainly effective, as the billboard has been around for at least ten days now, and the design has witnessed countless shares on Instagram.

Meanwhile, the tech giant’s upcoming iPhone 17 Pro may have made a public appearance in the wild, as an X user shared two photographs of a man in reflective sunglasses holding what could be the long-anticipated device inside a thick black protective case.

That said, some iPhone models currently sold in the US include OLED displays supplied by BOE, which is facing a ban after the International Trade Commission (ITC) declared it had infringed on Samsung Display’s confidential OLED technology, and the ban might affect the devices carrying BOE-made displays.

Elsewhere, Apple has filed a brutal response to the US Department of Justice’s antitrust lawsuit against it, eviscerating its claims one paragraph at a time as its legal team pointed out the perceived errors in the accusations and observations listed there.
