AI with no memory? Google unveils world’s ‘most capable’ privacy‑focused model
Google has introduced a new privacy-centric AI it claims to be the world’s most capable model trained from scratch with differential privacy.
The company revealed in a blog post on 12 September that the new model called VaultGemma is the largest open model fully pre-trained with differential privacy, having 1 billion parameters.
Prioritizing privacy
AI adoption is on a daily increase, with more sectors turning to it to drive results. With the wider adoption though, there’s the risk of compromising the security of those using the technology.
There’s therefore a need for a way to protect the privacy of users and make humans more comfortable about using AI.
With this understanding in view, Google built VaultGemma with differential privacy (DP), which offers a mathematically robust solution by adding calibrated noise to prevent memorization.
This means that the people can use the model without having to worry about what information it is recording about them, because it has no memory.
The company stresses that formal privacy is guaranteed with the new model, which has utility comparable to that of non-private models from roughly 5 years ago.
Because of this, VaultGemma will be closing an important gap in the AI world, ensuring strong privacy protection for users.
The fight for privacy
One of the greatest concerns that AI users have is the preservation of their privacy. It seems most AI models are built to actually retain information in the name of “improving” the model.
However, such information can be easily misused against the user in case of a leak. Recently, OpenAI had to tackle a fault in which 110,000 ChatGPT conversations were leaked.
To prevent such occurrences, VaultGemma could be the ideal model that is needed to protect users and their private conversations.
