Users panic as urgent Google Pixel bug bars 911 calls
The Google Pixel is a popular choice among Android lovers but just like any phone, it has its own weak points and a dangerous one at that.
Canadian cellphone carrier Bell on October 23 highlighted a bug in the phones that hinder users from making 911 calls in cases of emergency.
The company stated that the bug affects Pixel 6 and up, making it necessary for users to find alternative means of calling 911.
Users confirm bug
Some users started reporting the issue on social media around the same time as Bell, and many more have confirmed the existence of the bug after trying to dial the emergency number.
One Pixel user said they accidentally called 911 but the call did not go through until the sixth attempt. The user who lives with his mom that has critical health issues is re-considering owning a Pixel after the incident.
Another user wrote:
“Yep, my partner who I gave my Pixel 8 Pro to had to call 911 yesterday, and after 3 attempts gave up and had to use someone else’s phone to do it. I said I’d look into it and saw this now… Really not a good look for either Bell or Google.”
At the time of reporting, Google has not issued any formal statement on the issue. However, Bell later confirmed that the issue has been fixed.
A dent on Google’s image
Pixel phones are among the top Android phones globally for years, thanks to Google’s technology.
Despite their popularity, they have had their own issues but this is one of the biggest reported so far, making it a significant dent on the company’s image.
Hopefully, the news doesn’t affect the loyalty of Pixel users and does not become the grounds for many of them switching to other Android devices or even Apple phones in protest.
