Mazda unveils redesigned 2026 CX-5 with big changes

As the automobile industry continues to spew out new models and refurbished old ones, Mazda has jumped on the bandwagon with its redesigned 2026 CX-5 with major innovations.

Indeed, Mazda North American Operations has debuted the all-new 2026 CX-5, a third-generation of the model that has already seen more than 1.6 million CX-5 models sold in the United States alone, and 4.5 million around the world, the company said in a press release on July 10.

Specifically, the newest model introduces larger door openings, a panoramic sunroof, more spacious and lighter cabin with innovative and intuitive technology, as well as enhances vehicle safety to deliver a more capable, engaging, and desirable CX-5 than ever before. 

What 2026 CX-5 brings to the table

As it happens, the 2026 CX-5’s design focuses on Mazda’s ‘Wearable Gear’ concept, inspired by functional and stylish clothing that the renowned carmaker said “has the right look and fit in a variety of situations.” In particular:

“‘Wearable Gear’ embodies flexibility and approachability, offering a vehicle that is both at home in the city and thrives in more adventurous settings too.”

Furthermore, the 2026 CX-5 is a demonstration of the latest evolution of Kodo design, which draws upon a familiar silhouette of a CX-5 but also optimizes its proportions to create a roomier cabin and an exterior that hints at the vehicle’s capabilities and sense of stability, emphasized by the 19-inch wheels.

Inspired by the traditional Japanese ‘Kigumi’ joinery, the body aims to merge elegance with toughness. It features a chiseled grill and sharper lighting at the front, whereas a bold ‘MAZDA’ script replaces the bage at the rear, in line with the CX-70 and CX-90 siblings.

Mazda’s largest touch screen to date graces the centerpiece with a 15.6-inch display featuring Google Built-In, Google Gemini AI, Google Maps, and access to apps via the Play Store. The new model also promises an enhanced suite of advanced driver-assist systems, including the past IIHS Top Safety Pick + distinction.

Finally, its inner workings retain the tried-and-tested 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine, now fine-tuned to produce 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic and standard i-Activ AWD. Interestingly, Mazda has confirmed that a hybrid variant with much-anticipated Skyactiv-Z Hybrid system is coming in 2027.
