Inside of a sauna
Auto giant Toyota, in collaboration with sauna distributor Harvia, is developing a concept model for a sauna that uses hydrogen
According to a press release on 3 June, the sauna will be the world’s first to use hydrogen combustion technology to generate heat and set new standards for saunas.
Making saunas more sustainable
By combining Harvia’s sauna expertise with Toyota’s hydrogen combustion technology, the two are taking a major step toward making saunas more sustainable.
While the sauna concept mimics the traditional smoke saunas known for their gentle and soothing heat, they generate heat without releasing CO2 in the process.
The hydrogen combustion heater channels flames and warm air through sauna stones, heating them evenly from all sides, providing soft warmth and producing the pleasant steam, or löyly, when water is poured on the stones.
Timo Harvia, Head of Innovation and Technology at Harvia said:
“This collaboration with Toyota allows us to push the boundaries of sauna innovation and demonstrate our dedication to environmental responsibility. Toyota’s deep expertise in hydrogen handling and combustion gave us a safe and efficient way to pursue hydrogen as a clean energy source―something we might not have considered this soon without such a trusted partner. In doing so, we are not only exploring ways to minimize environmental impact but also creating a new kind of sauna experience that honors tradition while embracing the future.”
The two companies will present the hydrogen sauna concept at the World Sauna Forum this week and during Rally Finland next month in Jyväskylä.
Toyota’s carbon neutrality focus
This development is in line with Toyota’s long-standing dream of attaining carbon neutrality through the use of hydrogen in place of gas, both in automobiles and other machines.
The company has made much progress in this area, and recently unveiled a new fuel system for hydrogen commercial and heavy duty vehicles.
