Next-gen Lexus ES teaser hints at luxury sedan with PHEV, EV tech
As the majority of the industry races at full throttle towards the electric vehicle (EV) future, Lexus has teased its all-new electric ES model which the company will reveal next week at the Auto Shanghai event and which is the electric successor of the model debuted seven years ago.
Indeed, Toyota has dropped teasers of the new ES model that hint at some details of the expected design, which it will fully present on April 23 at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, the company said in a press release on April 16.
Details of the new Lexus ES model
Specifically, the teasers of the new Lexus ES prototype reveal a more sloped roofline in previous models, the LED daytime running lights that resemble the Nike-like swoosh sign (much like the RZ model), the main headlamps resting just below them and surrounded by black trim.
Furthermore, the rear features a full-width light bar alongside the thin taillights and the third brake light at the base of the rear window, suggesting a traditional sedan shape instead of a five-door liftback (although the silhouette might suggest otherwise).
Per the carmaker, the new ES will be a “global flagship model that refines advanced electrification technologies and pursues further evolution of its hallmark quietness and ride comfort.” Combined with the teasers that show what appear to be charge port doors on the front fenders, this indicates a plug-in hybrid or fully electric car available alongside regular hybrid options.
Earlier this year, Toyota made headlines as it opened its first in-house automotive battery plant outside of Japan – in North Carolina, US, where the auto giant now produces batteries for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) supported by 5,000 jobs.
