Confirmed: Hyundai and Samsung to build high-performance robot batteries
Hyundai Motor company with Kia has entered an agreement with Samsung SDI to build high-performance robot batteries.
In a press release on 25 February, Hyundai stated that the agreement will enable the three parties to build robot-specific batteries for integration into service robots.
This is in a bid to stabilize battery supply for robots and enhance price competitiveness through market expansion.
Breaking new grounds
Both Hyundai and Kia are top names in the automotive industry, but recently starting engaging in new technologies and robotics is one of them.
The batteries will significantly bring about increased energy density, output and usage time. The new batteries will be showcased at ‘InterBattery 2025’ to highlight growth potential in the global robot battery market.
Commenting, Vice President and Head of Robotics LAB at Hyundai Motor and Kia said:
“We will continue our endeavors to develop high-performance batteries for robots with Samsung SDI, which has battery production capabilities. In the long term, we aim to enhance battery supply stability for robots and achieve price competitiveness through market expansion.
The three parties will combine their resources and technical expertise to realize this goal of building robot batteries and integrating them into service robots.
While Samsung SDI will develop high-capacity materials to improve energy density and optimize design to enhance battery efficiency, Hyundai Motor and Kia will engage in joint marketing with Samsung SDI to expand the robot market.
A novel idea
Before now, robots did not have batteries specifically designed for them. Instead, they used batteries, power tools or light electric vehicles (LEVs), leading to inefficient power for these important agents.
This collaboration will change this by developing a high-performance robot battery optimized for limited spaces while enhancing energy density to increase output and usage time.
Hyundai has built a few products in the area of robotics recently, one of which is the “wearable robot X-ble Shoulder” for enhancing workers’ safety and efficiency.
