Major U.S. Navy’s ship crashed into merchant vessel in Mediterranean
The U.S. Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, a major warship has crashed into a merchant ship known as Besiktas-M.
According to a press release by the Navy on 13 February, the collision happened at approximately 11:46 p.m. local time on Feb. 12, while operating in the vicinity of Port Said, Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea.
No damage caused
The press release said that there was no damage to the vessel as a result of the collision, and no record of injury or flooding.
There is also no damage to the propulsion plants which are in safe and stable condition, but the incident is under investigation.
The USS Harry S. Truman is the eighth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy.
Named after the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, the vessel was launched on 7 September 1996 and commissioned on 25 July 1998.
She has participated in several operations since 2001, including Operation Joint Endeavor, Operation Deny Flight, Operation Southern Watch, Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Summer Pulse ’04, and NATO Operation Medshark/Majestic Eagle.
The magnificent vessel measures 1,092 feet (333 m) long, 257 feet (78 m) wide, and 244 feet (74 m) tall, reaching the height of a 24-story building. This vessel can accommodate around 90 aircraft and has a 4.5 acres (1.8 ha) flight deck.
There are four elevators on the vessel, that are 3,880 sq ft (360 m2) each to move planes between the flight deck and the hangar bay.
Although no information was provided on the merchant vessel involved in the crash, the size of this giant warship has likely done some real damage to the vessel, depending on the size and other factors.
