Big flop: Google AI Overview says astronauts can see 75% of Earth from International Space Station
Google AI Overview has committed another blunder by saying that astronauts can see 75% of the Earth from the International Space Station (ISS).
A Redditor reported the AI feedback on 2 January while expressing his frustration with the recently added Google Search feature that has returned several inaccurate feedbacks in the past.
An unfounded claim
Google AI Overview claims that astronauts can see 75% of the Earth from the ISS because of its orbital inclination at 51.6 degrees, which makes it possible to see most of the inhabited part of the earth.
This is clearly not accurate, as members of the Google Reddit community argued that it is impossible to see up to 50% of the Earth from whatever angle.
While some members of the community blamed the source for posting inaccurate information, some explained that the information from the source may be accurate but the AI summary misrepresented it.
Indeed looking at the source, the original author meant with a full orbit, but Gemini clearly misinterpreted it to mean that you could see 75% of the Earth’s surface in one go.
This suggests that Gemini isn’t yet reliable in presenting information, thus giving accurate sources a bad name as it presents information wrongly.
At this point, some members of the community are asking how they can block Gemini from accessing their websites to maintain their good reputation.
Previous errors
Of course, this isn’t the first time that Google Summary is committing a major error in presenting information.
A good number of users have reported in the past that the new feature is giving wrong answers. An example is when a user searched for ‘sep ira contribution deadline for 2024’ and got April 2024, instead of the correct date, April 2025.
