Deutsche Börse Pushes Deeper Into Crypto With Kraken Bet
In Brief
- • Deutsche Börse will invest $200M in Kraken for a 1.5% stake.
- • The move deepens their institutional crypto partnership.
- • It signals growing integration between traditional finance and crypto.
Deutsche Börse Group is putting another large institution on the list of firms moving deeper into cryptocurrency infrastructure. The exchange operator said it will invest $200 million in Kraken through a secondary share purchase, giving it a 1.5% fully diluted stake in the company. The deal expands a partnership that already spans trading, custody, settlement, collateral management, and tokenized assets.
Deutsche Börse turns its Kraken partnership into equity
As it happens, Deutsche Börse is now moving away from a loose collaboration to backing Kraken with capital.
In its press release, published on April 14, the company said the investment deepens the strategic partnership announced in December 2025, when both sides laid out plans to connect traditional market infrastructure with digital asset rails.
The focus is squarely institutional and includes regulated crypto products, tokenized markets, derivatives, and broader liquidity access across regions.
Deutsche Börse described Payward, Kraken’s parent, as a unified infrastructure layer, which is the kind of language traditional finance uses when it sees a platform as part of important operational architecture. As the press release reads:
“Deutsche Börse Group today announced a strategic investment of $200 million in Payward, Inc., the unified infrastructure layer behind global cryptocurrency platform Kraken. The investment is made through the acquisition of shares in a secondary transaction, resulting in a 1.5% fully diluted stake in the company.”
The bigger message is about market structure
All things considered, Deutsche Börse is building toward a hybrid market structure where traditional securities and blockchain assets can sit inside the same liquidity environment.
For Kraken, the benefit is obvious. A strategic shareholder like Deutsche Börse adds credibility and a clearer path into regulated market segments. For Deutsche Börse, the stake is a way to accelerate its digital asset strategy without having to build every piece alone.
The transaction still needs regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the second quarter. But the direction is already clear. Big exchange groups are starting to buy their way deeper into crypto.
